Different country, different culture. Probably, everyone has a thought that if can get a job if I get good grade in college. From my perspective, I always think about my future considerately. When I was younger, I grew up in Paloh Hutan, a forest that I used to live in. We live with a lot of constraints, therefore, we always put our lives in risk. Being considerate and arithmetic already became my nature. We have to be careful on everything in order to survive. Thus, I think before I do. I always think about every possible questions and answers to myself before I start anything. Am I working just for money? This is the fundamental question that I always asked myself. In United States, most of the people who are going to college just to get a better job, a better pay. But, things do not work that way. As an individual, it is important to get a high paid job. For the entire society, it is about make the entire human society to move forward. Imagine, if people works to just get paid, how many years should we wait to get technology advancement? If there were not those people who worked with passions to invent something else. You probably could not be holding your smart phone and scrolling to read the Facebook. You probably could not be learning over internet in such easier way. You probably needed to go a tougher way to get things done. Last generation did contribute a lot of high advance technology and knowledge that I have to pick up and improve it so that people can still get to access them. From my perspective of a citizen who lives in developing country, college is not a place for everyone just to look for a job; it is a place for everyone to follow up the last generation and improve what they have done with their passion.

“Some people died at age 25, aren’t buried until age 75”, Benjamin Franklin said. After 25 years old, people started to get a job, to have a family, to save money for kids. The life after 25 years old is slowly becoming a “walking dead”, things are getting repeat and repeat because of a lot of constraints start to show up without noticing. You have no choice to earn your money and work for your family and your life only. Job takes one third of your life if you work 8 hours per day. In other words, you do not even have extra time to pursuit what you want. People, we have to think about ourselves. I rather follow the path I had chosen and live without regret than living like a puppet that being controlled by money and life. Look to the bright side, other than job, there are still a lot of things you can pursuit for. College offers a lot of different majors such as a major for gaming, photography, culinary art and more. In this era, everything can be studied, everything has its own example of success. In gaming, a player named “Faker” in game, he earned about 2.3 million for entire year for just few competitions. In painting, Jackson Pollock started a genre of art, abstract expression which make a huge influence to the world of art. And, his name is still remembered from 20^th centuries until today. In culinary art, GordonRamsay, a chef who mastered cooking and teaching, scolding, and doing shows. From the beginning of their career, they do not earn a lot and even get frustrated on the path they chose because they just love what they are doing. Starting is always hard; maintaining is the hardest. They might confused about their path. But, they managed to reach the success, and now they are working happily. Around age 18 until age 22, there is the time you have to explore yourself, find what you really like to do, and what you are feeling to do for your future.

For myself, I choose to become a mechanical engineering, a job full of dangers. Using tools like saw and machine can be very dangerous if you misuse it. Before this, I actually have a better job that can earn a lot of money. I used to be a tuition teacher, and my income already surpass what my mother can make. But, it was not the way I wanted to. I grew up in forest where no one will teach you how to survive (except my family). My grandmother was the one who raise me up when I was younger. Since 5 years old, I was starting to hunt food and water for my old grandmother. For living, I had no choice; I had to hunt to keep me and my grandmother survive. I had no choice; I had to learned archery quickly by shooting 200 arrows per night when I was free. I had no choice to learn all the survive skills before I got mature enough. I lived a situation that matter of life and death so I have no choice. After moving to city, I found out that people in city can choose who he or she wanted to be. I was so impressed and so envy to them. So, I swear to God that I will be the one I wanted to be. When I was younger, I created my own bow and arrows and I found out I was so into building, fixing, creating stuffs. Even went through countless times of failure and hurt, I never stopped trying but I still felt so small when I failed. Therefore, I wanted to learn things that I did not know and would help on my every projects. Thus, I have to come college and learn those skills. With passions, I already started my projects (maybe for final year project) even I am in Remedial English that causes me unable to pick my major subjects. Besides that, I built my own furniture such as shoe racks, bedframe, and working bench with the material that college does not want anymore. I also redesigned my bow with another material and improved the force and tension so that the bow can shoot even further and stronger impact. Without college teaching and with my passion, I can go this far. What if after I graduated from mechanical engineering? How far can I go? How excited and happy that I can be? Those will be the question that made my 8 hours of working become very and very fun. With passions, job is a thing you always crave for; you will never stop; you will always be happy of doing that job. Without passions, job is just a constraints and stress that kill your insanity. After your insanity is dead, you will be the ‘walking dead’ for your rest of life and only buried when age 75.

Technology advancement and skills, those are the things that keep us up to date and save our time. You won’t need to go so far to market to get your newspaper, you can read it online; you won’t need to learn some dishes over your friend, you can find the recipe online; you won’t need to pass up hard copy homework and assignment, you can pass up over the internet. Humans get improve and improve through generation by generation. Last generation improve what last two generation did. For example, computer is only processing data without showing a proper User Interface. And today, we have different kind of User Interface. From Windows XP to Windows 10, the features were getting more and more. From iPhone 3 to iPhone 7, the usefulness of an iPhone almost surpass what a computer can do. Technology are changing and improving in a good way. However, to continue this improvement and advancement, people is needed in this process. We have to continue their masterpiece and create another masterpiece that made people get to access more and make life easier. College is a place that you can communicate with people from last generation. Learning from them is the fastest way to get to know things they reach. The rest is on this generation. In college, we learn how they come out with this idea. In future, we think how to surpass their ideas. And, this is why gadget become more and more improve. My parents always asked me how to use the latest gadget and I taught them a lot. This is happening because technology had a great leap between this two generations. It is a good sign and impress me. Will I be asking my children how to use the latest gadget in the future? This will depend on what this generation can reach.

            College is a place that collected a lot of passions instead of jobs. Job came from its usefulness and passions. Do not go college just for job because you might need to work for years and years. If you want to change your job, thing will need to start over again. You will have to learn things again for another job. Find your passion that make you complete. You can find your passion from a person or little action, or maybe your emotion. Once you found it, grab it and do not let go. Keep going, make your life even complete. This is how you win your life. I found mine, it is time to get yours !
